STRINGING ROTARY VALVES

It is important to be able to change a valve string in an emergency. To change a string you need the following articles: a piece of Horn string at least eight inches in length, a small screwdriver, and something to cut the string. Remove all the old string from the valve by loosening the string holding screws marked by arrows in Figure 6. Tie a knot in one end of the string that is too large to pull through the small hole near the top of the valve lever.  Thread the long end of the string through the small hole at the top of the valve lever as shown in Figure 1.

Pull the long end of the string between the lever and the stop‑arm (Figure 2). Continue to wrap the string around the stop-arm and the string holding screw to form a "figure eight" as pictured in Figure 3.

Thread the string through the small hole at the bottom of the lever (Figure 4). Wrap the string around the small string holding screw at the bottom of the lever (Figure 5).

Tighten the two screws marked by arrows in Figure 6 while pulling the string tight by the end without the knot. Slightly loosening the screw marked by the arrow on the right (Figure 6) will allow adjustment of the lever to match the height of the other levers. Tighten this screw, and any others that might be loose, and cut off the excess string. Slightly melting the two loose ends of the string with a small flame will help avoid fraying.
